Something that amazes me is how resilience is actively taught in primary schools. Where I work resilience is a core value and we talk pupils through 'tenacity' through change. If only we'd had that at school.
I’m encouraged by what’s taught in my daughter’s school, too. Do your pupils learn about the rights of the child? I still think schools have a long way to go…fertility and finances are two things I’d love to see on the secondary school curriculum! But, as you say, we’re a world away from our school days.
Oh so many new books to read and oh so little time!! These all look like fab suggestions and I haven’t read any of them. Adding to my reading list now. I love the quote from Amelia Earhart too- I haven’t heard that one and it’s perfect. I’ve stated out on what feels like a monumental undertaking and I’m finding it scary for so many reasons, but perhaps now I’ve started, all I need is to stay tenacious.
Well now I'm curious to know what this undertaking is, but if you plan to work on it quietly, I'm wishing you all the best. It can be hard to keep going when things feel risky and scary, but you have so much creative energy, I'm sure that will pull you through!
And don't get me started on my reading pile. SO. LITTLE. TIME. I first read the Amelia Earhart quote this week and thought it was perfect for this article. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, Emily 😀
I have written about it a little already and sending out my first proper post about it tomorrow, I feel a little sick that the wonderful thing that's in my imagination will not translate to reality and what feels monumental to me will be just a bit 'meh' to others..!
I LOVED Rick Rubin’s book! It ignited a fire within me and initiated a return to the book that first inspired me to write about my life experiences - Jack Kerouac’s Dharma Bums. I wanted to remember why I started. That book set off a chain of books and thoughts that resulted me in starting a Substack, and THIS place is the most amazing place I’ve ever encountered! So many like-minded people and incredible writers.
I love how you talk about the idea of improvisation because every time I feel stuck in life that’s what I do - get into this spirit of experimentation, which ultimately unlocks something. It’s like it gets us in the flow and out of our own way so our intuition can speak and guide us forward into the next chapter. Great read!
I believe The Creative Act originally started out as a book about music before Rubin decided it needed to be about the fact we’re all inherently creative. Haven’t read Dharma Bums but can imagine it will now be going in my TBR pile!
Adopting an attitude of experimentation and playfulness has made a huge different to my mental health, and my creative output. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, too 💛

That’s music to my ears 🥰

I felt the same about Brand Seasons. Still do! We just have to hold onto that vision. I’ll look out for that post!
