Love this invitation. I spent an otherwise guilt free hour browsing my guilty pleasure which is the ‘self help’ section of my local Waterstones instead of the more learned, literary sections. I usually get a few tips then leave. But because I always feel compelled to support bookshops this time I left with ‘The Art of Rest’ by Claudia Hammond. So my next adventure will include finding a coffee shop to read it without interruptions.
I love these suggestions of a micro-adventure, especially the trip to the bookshop, always a good idea! And framing these things as a micro adventure maybe puts us into a more curious and creative mindset as well x
In this last year, with the burnout, I have been labelling walks, small fishing trips on the wee boat and small moments as adventures, so that my life was less stale in this moment of recovery and solitude, of inner discovery. And it really helped my mood. Walking to the train tracks (300m from the house) and notice something. I was microadventuring ✨ I love this reframing, a less anxious, more attainable form of adventuring that can happen on a faily basis, without having to jump on a plane 🥰 so lovely Sarah!
This reminds me a little of the "Artists Date" Julia Cameron speaks to in her book the Artists Way. The idea is, once a week, to spend time alone doing something that stimulates your creativity. It's a subjective experience and one I'm annoyingly bad at. This post has given me a timely kick up the butt!
Yes, a similar idea, though you can enjoy some company! I like Artist Dates but the solo nature of them is difficult with a tiny one. I look forward to that alone time 🤗
This is such a lovely read, Katie and Sarah. And thank you for making me realising I've already been doing this! We moved to Ribble Valley a couple of years ago and it's really ignited my sense of micro adventure. There are so many beautiful and new places to explore just a few minutes' away. And our last few 'holidays' have basically been exploring lots of places within an hour of where we live. Such a joy. And YES - agree exploring bookshops and libraries is one of life's great joys.
We moved at a similar time, Janelle, and I feel the same about local adventure, though I think you’ve likely experienced more than me in recent times! Your response made me think of “home tourism.” Sometimes the best holidays are right on our doorsteps!
Yes, home tourism! I can highly recommend. We're also very fortunate that Cumbria is just next door. We've had some brilliant adventures and feels like we've only just scratched the surface. Also we can have our cat with us on holiday so win/win.
Love this post so much 💜 I’ve been a big fan of smaller adventures for a long time and this is just the most wonderful reminder. Particularly enjoying the prompts
Love love loved this note!! I needed it too, I think. To remind me of my love for exploring and seeing the adventure in everyday life as well as those big, beautiful journeys. 🫶🏻

That sounds like a great read! I wrote about creative rest earlier this year. You might like to read the article:

I think so! Helps us find a bit of magic where we wouldn’t ordinarily expect to find it 🌈
Yes and we all need more magic in our lives ✨️ 💛!

Thank you lovely. So true ✨
A wonder walk - yes! This feels like a beautiful way to frame any time outdoors. I wonder (yes...) if I can invite a family member or two to join me?
Of course! I’m just in a season of dreaming of being alone somewhere with silence for company…

Is the cat happy to go with you? I don’t know if Bella would enjoy it! Hadn’t even considered bringing her anywhere with us as she hates the car…
I mean cos we're at home! So no need to get a cat sitter or change his routine 🐾

Glad it spoke to you, Sophie! It was a nice reminder for me, too 💛
